How can immersive media communicate situated experiences of territory while remaining attentive to the limits of mediated presence?

Barefoot, Humidity & Carimbó is a series of four one-minute immersive works commissioned by Rioterra in Porto Velho.

Each video follows a different encounter with the city and its surroundings.

One moves through a traditional fish market. Another takes place on a boat at sunset while a carimbó dancer performs. A third follows a walk through the forest. The fourth enters a nursery filled with young plants.

Together, the videos build a fragmented experience of Porto Velho through movement, sound, vegetation, water, people, changing light, and atmosphere.

The project explores how VR can communicate aspects of place through proximity and sensory attention. It also considers the distance that remains between mediated experience and physically inhabiting a territory.

The works were later made freely available through VR headsets installed in public buildings across Porto Velho.
